Single Glazed window graphic showing energy loss

Did you know that your windows could be responsible for a massive portion of your home’s heat loss?

One of our trusted suppliers, The Residence Collection, recently carried out a study that has used thermal imagery to investigate the performance of single, double, and triple-glazed windows.

The study revealed that British houses lose 18% of their heat through windows. This means your windows could account for nearly one-fifth of your heating bills.

Single Glazed Windows Perform Poorly

The study compared the U-values (a measure of heat loss) of different glazing options.

Single-glazed windows performed the worst, with an average U-value of 5.5 and a heat loss of 52.8 W/°C per window.

The single pane of glass in these windows allows heat to escape quickly and invites condensation and dampness, making them the least energy-efficient option.

Double-Glazed Windows Offer Better Performance

Double-glazed windows fared better, with an average U-value of 1.2 and a heat loss of 11.52 W/°C per window – a large improvement over single-glazed windows. Upgrading to double glazing can lead to an average savings of £135 per year on energy bills.

Triple-Glazed Windows Excel

However, the most impressive results came from triple-glazed windows. A home with triple glazing has an average U-value of 0.74 and a heat loss of just 7.1 W/°C per window.

That amounts to a dramatic 35% reduction in heat loss compared to double glazing.

This makes triple glazing the ultimate choice for homeowners looking to maximise their home’s thermal efficiency and minimise energy costs.

It’s also worth mentioning that triple-glazing lowers internal humidity, reduces mould, and boasts superior soundproofing to single and double-glazing.
